Maleme is a historical village of Chania, located 17 km on the west of Chania city. It is known for the heroic resistance of the locals in the Battle of Crete against the German Nazi who launched an airborne invasion in Crete in May 1941 during the World War II. The German paratroopers who lost their lives in the attack are buried in the German Cemetery in Maleme.
